Non-profits better prepared for National Volunteer Week
Local charities and non-profit groups will now have better direction when handling food safely, thanks to Queensland Health’s newly released Food safety fundraising events pocketbook guide.
Executive Director of Queensland Health’s Health Protection Branch Sophie Dwyer said the guide had been fully revised, was now interactive, and included new information on food labelling and allergen declarations – just in time for National Volunteers Week celebrations.
“Sausage sizzles, cake stalls and other food-related events are great ways for charities and non-profit community groups to raise funds and highlight their cause at the same time,” Ms Dwyer said.
“However, volunteers who work at fundraisers need to know how to handle food safely, to protect consumer from food borne illness.
“The Food safety fundraising events pocketbook guide has been developed to assist non-profit groups to comply with the food safety requirements for a fundraising event under Queensland food safety laws.
“The revamped pocket guide now includes a foldout map of a temporary food stall, information on food labelling and allergen declarations, as well as food suppliers, labelling, transporting and handling.
“An interactive version of the guide is available online, which can be used in the field on handheld devices.”
Ms Dwyer said with hundreds of events planned across the state for National Volunteers Week, the Food safety fundraising events guide should be on everyone’s handheld device.
“National Volunteer Week is the largest annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of volunteers,” she said.
“The week-long celebration will include breakfasts, morning and afternoon teas, luncheons, and picnics, where I’m sure the guide will be put to good use in handling and serving foods safely.”
National Volunteers Week will be held from 21 to 27 May this year.
