The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service has tested more people than the combined population of Caloundra, Noosa, Maleny, Nambour, and Gympie, and quarantined enough people to fill USC Stadium about three times over since the pandemic started.

Raw numbers reveal the scale of the Sunshine Coast HHS’s COVID-19 response.

Since the Australia’s first case was confirmed on 25 January 2020, Queensland has recorded 1,793 cases. Of these, 125 cases have recorded in the Sunshine Coast region with 124 recovered and 0 active.

“Around 80 per cent of Queensland’s cases have been acquired overseas and detected while in hotel quarantine, and this is reflective on the Sunshine Coast,” Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said.

“This means the majority of our cases were safely isolating while they were infectious, instead of risking the health of others in the community.

“It highlights just how important our hotel quarantine policy has been.”

Sadly, the virus has claimed the lives of seven people in Queensland, including one person on the Sunshine Coast. Dr Young said the responsible actions of Queenslanders undoubtedly prevented more tragedies.

Sunshine Coast Public Health physician Dr Penny Hutchinson said the community must also be proud of its role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our region.

“Our community has one a great job. They’ve stayed at home when required, they’ve worn masks when directed and got tested when they’ve had symptoms,” she said.

“We can’t do this alone and we’re grateful to all the assistance we’ve received from residents to protect our community, especially our most vulnerable.”

Dr Young said Queensland’s vaccine roll-out had progressed well given the nation’s issues sourcing supplies.

As of 29 July 2021, Sunshine Coast HHS has administered 81,142 COVID-19 vaccinations, including 76,382 Pfizer doses and 4,760 AstraZeneca doses.

Dr Hutchinson said vaccination was an important part of helping protect our community.

“While a good number of our residents have been vaccinated, we want everyone to get on board.

“Talk to your family, talk to your friends and register for your vaccination.”
