Queensland has recorded 0 new cases of COVID-19 today.
Unfortunately, we can also confirm that a 77-year-old male from PNG passed away from complications due to COVID-19 yesterday, 5 April 2021.
He was a dual Papua New Guinea / UK national who was transported by Medivac from PNG to Queensland on 28 March, as his condition was worsening.
Since that day, he has been in ICU at Redcliffe hospital and unfortunately passed away yesterday.
Queensland Health offers its sincere condolences to his family during this time.
PNG is one of Queensland’s closest neighbours, and when we can offer support to our neighbours, we can, and we will.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, aeromedical crews have transferred a number of COVID positive, and potentially COVID positive patients to Queensland.
As this case was diagnosed in PNG, it will be not be included in Queensland’s statistics.
The Queensland COVID-19 death toll remains at 6 and has not changed since April 2020.
It is more important than ever for all Queenslanders to go and get tested, even if they have the mildest of symptoms.
Current restrictions are still in place for Queenslanders, which will likely end on 15 April.
Fragments of SARS-CoV-2 have been detected at the Capalaba, Maroochydore and Maryborough wastewater treatment plants.
Dr Jeannette Young said anyone with symptoms, no matter how mild, should come forward and get tested.
"Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, and loss of taste or smell," Dr Young said.
“As we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks, we’re still in this pandemic and we can’t be complacent.
“It is critical we detect any cases that we may not be aware of as quickly as possible through our testing system.
