Michelle is a Senior Psychologist at the Southern Queensland Centre of Excellence in Inala. Michelle wanted to be a Psychologist from high school onwards. Michelle was conscious of the mental health and addiction issues from growing up in her community. Seeing that it was a common story across the country, Michelle wanted to see Indigenous people working in those roles, to more appropriately and safely help her own mob.
Michelle says the best thing about her role is filling a gap for people that hasn't been filled anywhere else.
"Getting feedback from people that it is culturally safe – so they are able to benefit in a way that they haven’t been able to benefit before from other counsellors or other mental health professionals. That’s very rewarding," says Michelle.
Michelle is also a Team Leader for the Way Forward project (Indigenous Mental Health and Addictions team).
