Nurse endoscopy
To address the rapidly growing demand for endoscopy services, the nurse endoscopy model is being adopted in Queensland.
Nurses in many other countries, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands safely provide endoscopy services using this model.
Following two Australian trials of the model at Austin Hospital in Victoria and Logan Hospital in Queensland, it has been found that nurse endoscopy can be implemented safely in Australia and will increase access to endoscopic services.
Nurse endoscopy services are now being introduced at some Hospital and Health Services in Queensland. Under the model, nurses carry out endoscopic procedures within collaborative multidisciplinary teams supported by medical staff.
