1. Introduction Framework

This course discusses the factors that impact on the ability of health professionals to work effectively in a multicultural setting.

Topic 1 defines culture and introduces the cultural capability framework which provides a basis for the development of skills that will assist health staff to work with and provide services to the multicultural population.

Topic 2 examines the impacts on culture on health and discusses the importance of effective communication including using interpreters when required.

It also discusses factors that will assist health practitioners to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including protocols that should be adopted when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
