Spleen Australia

If you do not have a spleen (asplenia), or have reduced spleen function (hyposplenism), you can register with Spleen Australia to access information and support to assist with managing this aspect of your health.

Registered patients will receive:

  • An education kit with information on the best way to manage this aspect of your health
  • A telephone education session with a registered nurse
  • Telephone support to ask any questions about this aspect of your health
    - Queenslanders call 1800 SPLEEN (775336)
  • An annual newsletter providing vaccination reminders
  • A “health update” either emailed or sent in post as the need arrives during the year. Patients and GPs are encouraged to review the Spleen Australia website www.spleen.org.au for updated docs and information

Spleen Australia will also ensure that the doctors of registered Queenslanders receive consistent, best-practice recommendations for the prevention and treatment of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI).

Information for patients who lack a functioning spleen

Following a splenectomy or a diagnosis of hyposplenism, it is important that you understand how to keep healthy and take necessary steps to do so.

Your health care team may refer you to Spleen Australia as they provide support services to help you and your family manage your health. Alternatively, you can register yourself via the Spleen Australia website.

Registering with Spleen Australia gives:

  • you access to important information and support
  • your doctors access to consistent, best-practice recommendations for the prevention and treatment of OPSI and other serious infections.

If your patient does not have a spleen (asplenia), or has reduced spleen function (hyposplenism), you can refer them to Spleen Australia via the website.

Following receipt of these details Spleen Australia will make contact with your patient via phone or mail and manage the consent process to include them in the registry. If at this stage your patient declines the services of Spleen Australia their personal details will be expunged from the registry.
