Radiation and nuclear sciences

The Radiation and Nuclear Sciences team provide radiation science-based solutions to Queensland Government, public and private sector clients.

Radiation science-based solutions

Our solutions include:

  • Radiation regulatory surveillance monitoring—developing and implementing regulatory programs
  • Radiation incidents—investigating and reporting on radiation incidents
  • Scientific advice—providing advice for intra- and inter-government agencies
  • Radiation emergency preparedness—participating in and developing plans and programs in the event of radiological incidents
  • Radiation safety and awareness training—developing and delivering training programs
  • Research and development—human and environmental radiation health-focussed research.

We provide these services as part of our Queensland Government obligations but we also help and support private sector clients.

Radiochemistry and laboratory services

We maintain and operate an extensive suite of portable radiation measurement and sampling equipment which is supported by comprehensive radioanalytical facilities. Services are provided under ISO9001 Systems Certification, and radioanalytical testing is consistent with ISO17025 accreditation requirements.

Our instrumentation and preparation facilities include:

  • trace level radiochemistry and gamma spectrometry laboratories
  • on-site radiation capability for investigating, surveying, monitoring and sampling
  • calibration facilities for environmental and protection level radiation measurement instruments.

Environmental health physics services

Our qualified health physicists and support staff provide:

  • radiation advisory and measurement services
  • radiation surveys and sample collection
  • surveillance and monitoring programs
  • reports on management the effects of radiation
  • calibration of measuring instruments.

Radiation device and facilities certification

Our staff hold licences to deal with radiation sources under the Queensland Radiation Safety Act 1999 (Act), and are accredited for certifying radiation devices and facilities including:

  • radiation advisory and measurement services
  • radiation surveys
  • sample collection
  • surveillance and monitoring programs
  • reports on managing the effects of radiation
  • calibration of measuring instruments.

We provide these services as part of our Queensland Government obligations but we can also service private sector clients.

Emergency response

We actively participate in state (Queensland Health), national (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)), and international (ALMERA) emergency response networks.

Collaborate or partner with us

We value research partnerships and aim to work together in research and education to strengthen radiation science and safety outcomes. Past collaborations have included preparing joint grant applications, establishing centres of excellence, participating in staff exchanges and providing access to our state-of-the-art equipment. We are always looking for opportunities to collaborate on research and development initiatives. To collaborate or partner with us contact Client Services and Liaison on 1800 000 377.
