Chiropractic imaging practices - Radiation Health
This page provides advice on how to apply for licences to possess and use ionising radiation apparatus for chiropractic imaging purposes.
Use licence application kit
Any person who is seeking to use plain film diagnostic X-ray equipment for diagnostic radiography of the spine, pelvis or extremities must hold a use licence issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:

Download and complete one of the following application forms.
Note: Form 4 is intended to be used by the majority of chiropractors seeking licences to use radiation apparatus. This application is intended for electronic completion to facilitate fast-tracking of applications.
If Form 4 cannot be completed using the selections available within the form, Form 2 must be used .
Submit the completed application form, with the supporting information as outlined in the application form, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.
Possession licence application kit
Any person who is seeking to possess a radiation source must hold a possession licence, issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. A possession licence is required before an application for approval to acquire X-ray equipment may be granted. To apply for a licence and to seek approval to acquire the X-ray equipment necessary to commence a chiropractic imaging service, the following steps should be followed:

Develop a radiation safety and protection plan which details the radiation protection measures that will be put in place to mitigate the radiation risk in the practice. Information to assist in the development of such a plan is provided in the following link:
The preparation of radiation safety and protection plans may be assisted by procuring the services of a consultant. The following is a list of consultants who have advised the department that they are able to provide consultative services to assist applicants and possession licensees in the preparation of radiation safety and protection plans:
Submit the completed application form, with a signed and dated radiation safety and protection plan, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.
Once a possession licence has been granted, submit a completed application for approval to acquire a radiation apparatus form (PDF, 62KB) to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.
