This page provides advice on how to apply for licences to possess and use radiation apparatus for veterinary diagnostic radiography.
Any person who uses radiation apparatus (X-ray equipment) for veterinary purposes must hold an appropriate use licence issued under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. To apply for a licence, the following steps should be followed:
Read the following information sheet which outlines the process by which veterinary surgeons, veterinary technologists or veterinary nurses may apply for a licence to use diagnostic X-ray equipment for veterinary purposes.
Download and complete one of the following application forms.
Note: Form 5 is intended to be used by the majority of persons seeking licences to use radiation apparatus for veterinary purposes. This application is intended for electronic completion to facilitate fast-tracking of applications.
If Form 5 cannot be completed using the selections available within the form, Form 2 must be used .
Submit the completed application form, with the supporting information as outlined in the application form, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

Submit the completed application form, with a signed and dated radiation safety and protection plan, to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.

You are advised to exercise caution about purchasing X-ray equipment over the internet. While X-ray equipment for sale via the internet may appear to be cheaper than that offered by established Australian distributors, the X-ray equipment may not meet the relevant radiation safety standard, may be hazardous and may not be approved for use.
Once a possession licence has been granted, submit a completed application for approval to acquire a radiation apparatus form (PDF, 62KB) to Radiation Health. The prescribed fee must accompany the application.
