Adult Congenital Heart UnitTPCHThe Adult Congenital Heart Unit research aims at a better understanding of this unique group of patients with a view to improving their management and quality of life. Focus has been on the multiple medical problems of patients with the most complex cardiac anatomy who have had the Fontan operation. A 5 year Australia wide Partnership study is financed by an NHMRC grant. Anaesthesia Research GroupTPCHAnaesthesia Research Group is involved in high quality national and international multicentre projects that helps us to improve and review anaesthetic practice in order to provide exceptional care to the patients along their surgical pathway. The emphasis of our research is patient related outcomes. Clinical Research Unit, Cancer Care ServicesRBWHThe Cancer Care Service Clinical Research Unit runs a very active research and clinical trials program which includes Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Our portfolio includes international, national and local studies. There is an ongoing collaboration between the Clinical Research Unit and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute which corresponds to an improved ability to develop and participate in translational research programs. Many of the drugs now used as standard cancer treatments have been developed as a result of trials that this department has been involved in. Kidney Health Research GroupMetro NorthThe Kidney Health Service has a strong research ethos with a commitment to a wide range of clinical research activities. Our research portfolio includes multiple clinical trials, registry studies, a CKD biomarker database, and supporting PhD research projects in clinical and basic sciences. Key research themes include CKD, glomerular nephritis, perioperative medicine, lupus, vasculitis, microvesicles, dietetic interventions, cell death and cellular senescence.

We have experience across a range of scientific and clinical disciplines and are open to collaboration with clinical, academic and industry partners.

Nutrition & Dietetics DepartmentRBWHThe RBWH Department of Nutrition and Dietetics are recognised leaders in nutrition and dietetic research, conducting high impact and clinically relevant research and knowledge translation to improve care and service for patients at RBWH and in health services more broadly. Notably, our research has led to the development and implementation of statewide programs to prevent and treat malnutrition and pressure injuries; proactive pre-treatment nutrition support for patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer; and changes to routine antenatal care that has seen a reduction in the proportion of women gaining excess weight in pregnancy, preventing future chronic disease in both the women and their children.Nutrition & Dietetics Department

Oral Health ServicesMetro NorthResearch has been directed towards the investigation of prevalence and risk factors for oral disease, the link between asthma and oral health, and the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia. Orthopaedic Research and Data Management UnitTPCHThe Orthopaedic Research and Data Management Unit is responsible for collecting and collating Orthopaedic Surgery data for clinical audit and research purposes, on approximately 1400 orthopaedic surgical cases each year. The Unit assists the Orthopaedic Surgeons, Registrars, Fellows and Residents in their responsibilities in maintaining quality of practice and promoting research and teaching within the speciality.
