We provide outpatient treatments for a wide range of cancer types.

How to access this service

You need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service.  Your doctor will need to send your referral letter to the hospital.

Clinics

Day appointments (Outpatient appointments) for specialised oncology treatments and doctor consultation services may visit the:

Level 4 (Chemotherapy or a doctors’ appointment)

Check in at the main reception desk in the waiting room, Level 4 Joyce Tweddell Building. If you are feeling unwell when you arrive, please tell the reception desk, so a nurse can see you straight away.

Level 3 (Radiation therapy)

Check in at reception Level 3 Joyce Tweddell Building. If you have either a pacemaker or an internal defibrillator; please notify the radiation therapist and nurse when you come for your planning.  Please ensure you bring the necessary information with details of your device.

Weekend and after hours access

The main access doors are locked by security between approximately 10.00pm and 6.00am. To access the hospital, it is go through the Emergency Department. Please notify nursing staff if you anticipate being locked out of the ward or the Joyce Tweddell Building, or if you have any family members expected after 10.00pm or before 6.00am.

Blood tests before your appointment

If your doctor has requested that you have a blood test you should get this done the day before your appointment. If you have the test done at the RBWH pathology collection centre you need to allow at least 2 hours for the results to be available.

If it is more convenient, you could have your blood collected at a private pathology centre, such as Queensland Medical Laboratories (QML) or Sullivan and Nicolaides (S&N) or at a Pathology Queensland collection centre at your local hospital. You need to allow 1 – 2 days before your appointment for the results to be available.

You can use any pathology referral form given to you by your doctor at any collection centre.

Weekend collections

The RBWH pathology collection centre is open weekends from 7.30am–11.30am (closed public holidays). Some private pathology centres are also open limited hours on weekends. Refer to their websites for more information.

Home visit

If you have difficulty attending a collection centre, there is the option for a home visit from the following private pathology providers:

Sullivan and Nicolaides (S&N) No charge if eligible. Need to be referred by a doctor or clinic nurse.

What to bring

Each time you visit us
  • Your Medicare card
  • Private health insurance card (if you have one)
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
  • Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
  • Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
  • Your appointment letter
  • Any special items listed on your letter
  • WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
  • Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
  • Something to read or do while you wait
  • An adult carer to support you and take you home
  • Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney (if you have one)
  • A jacket or cardigan in case you get cold

We would like to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Please review this information and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact us.

Appointment times

It is important that you attend your appointment at the scheduled time.  Being late for your appointment can cause other patients to be delayed in receiving their treatment.

Please let the nurses in the waiting area know if you are leaving the area prior to your appointment/treatment. You can leave your mobile number with the nurses so we are able to contact you if you are required sooner for treatment.

Pharmacy

There are a number of pharmacy options at the hospital:

  • Cancer Care Services has a Satellite Pharmacy located on Level 4, Joyce Tweddell Building. It operates from 9.00am–5.00pm Monday to Friday.
  • The Pharmacy is located on level 1, Ned Hanlon Building. It operates 7 days a week.
  • The Atrium (private pharmacy) is located on level 1, Ned Hanlon Building (near the Food Court). It is open Monday-Friday from 7.00am–6.00pm  and Saturday and Sunday 9.00am–3.00pm .

Teaching and training

Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is a tertiary hospital, meaning that we have a close relationship with universities. With this in mind, you will often have fully supervised students observing and assisting with your treatments, which are an integral part of their learning; shaping the next generation of health professionals.

Patient transport

In certain circumstances you may be eligible for patient transport to get you here for your treatment, if you have exhausted all personal transport options. Community transport providers may be available within your suburb. Please note that these services may have costs associated. Ask nursing staff for further information. If using ambulance, DVA or community bus transport, you will arrive and leave through the Transit Lounge on the ground floor, Dr James Mayne Building.

The are other parking and transport facilities located a short walk from the main entrance.
