You and your unborn baby may be at high-risk of medical complications and need specialised care. If you are experiencing a complicated and high-risk pregnancy, we are here to provide holistic care in a supportive and intimate environment.
While this is a time of excitement and joy, it can also be a time of worry and anxiety about your baby’s health. We can provide answers to help you better understand your pregnancy. Our priority is to ensure the best outcome for you and your baby.
Our services
We aim to improve the health and wellbeing of women and their unborn babies through a specialised diagnostic, treatment and management service.
We provide:
- Ultrasound scans including first trimester screening for Down syndrome and multiple pregnancies.
- Clinics including early pregnancy assessment and pregnancy loss follow up.
- Pre-pregnancy counselling for women with complex pregnancies and previous poor pregnancy outcomes.
- Fetal MRI services for babies with fetal brain, chest and other abnormalities.
- Care for mothers with significant medical problems such as cardiac and renal disease.
How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.

Frequently asked questions
If you live in a rural or remote area and have to travel more than 50km for specialist medical services that are not available locally, you may be eligible for the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme to help with your travel costs. If you have been referred from another Queensland Health hospital, ask your doctor from your ‘home’ hospital for travel subsidy forms and bring them to your appointment at RBWH.
If you would like a copy of your scan report, simply ask the doctor or sonographer at the time of the scan and they will be happy to provide one. If you would like a copy of a scan report from a previous visit, call the Maternal Fetal Medicine Receptionist on (07) 3646 0840 during business hours.

Health professionals
We are the largest tertiary and quaternary Maternal and Fetal Medicine unit in Queensland. We cover an area between Townsville and south of the Brisbane River.
We work closely with Genetic Health Queensland to provide prenatal testing to women with a family history of genetic syndromes.
Invasive procedures include:
- amniocentesis
- chorionic villous sampling
- in utero fetal blood transfusion or sampling
- fetal shunts
- amnioreduction
- radiofrequency ablation
- laser photocoagulation for twin to twin transfusion syndrome.
We are one of a few tertiary Queensland Health hospitals to provide termination of pregnancy to mothers over 22 weeks of gestation following a diagnosis of fetal abnormalities and significant maternal medical conditions.
