Art and Health Program

The Sunshine Coast University Hospital has launched its Art and Health Program, which acknowledges the proven benefits of art as a medium for health promotion and therapeutic intervention. By taking a holistic approach to integrating public art throughout the campus, the new hospital will embed art into the design, the landscape and the ongoing operation. The Art and Health Program will support, enhance and develop the existing cultural and creative ecology in the region.

Exemplar Health issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for artists to contribute to the Art and Health Program for the hospital. This EOI closed on 2 March 2015. From this EOI four significant and integrated sculptural public artworks have been commissioned for spaces within the hospital as follows:

  • Outdoor room (external public space at hospital entrance)
  • Central courtyard (major external courtyard at centre of the hospital)
  • Cancer Care Centre courtyard (within central courtyard)
  • The two major public lift lobbies (internal)

In addition to the integrated public artworks, the EOI submissions were assessed to procure a collection of wall-based art for selected patient rooms and waiting areas throughout the main hospital building.
