|The $408 million redevelopment of Mackay Base Hospital is underway to deliver additional services to the community and is due for completion in early 2015.|
|Improved cardiac care is available to Mackay Hospital and Health Service (HHS) residents with life-saving cardiac procedures now performed for the first time.|
|Proserpine Hospital has launched a Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) to provide Whitsunday with continuity of care. The MGP enables women to be cared for by the same midwife or a small group of known midwives. This free maternity model of care service empowers women to take ownership of their pregnancy, birth and parenting in a supportive environment.|
|Infrastructure at rural facilities is being upgraded in 2014-15. In Bowen, $1.228 million will focus on clinical space redesign to improve efficiency, access and outcomes of healthcare delivery—the emergency department will be refurbished as part of this. Another $4.5 million will include electrical and mechanical upgrades, and building infrastructure replacements. In Proserpine $1.4 million will redevelop the acute and primary care clinic, expand training facilities and improve other infrastructure. The hospital's kitchen will also be renovated with a $700,000 grant.|
|A home therapies renal unit has opened to provide people with kidney disease the ability to care for themselves at home instead of travelling to Mackay Base Hospital for dialysis. There are 10 new renal dialysis machines and associated infrastructure located at community health to deliver this service. So far patients from Moranbah, Bowen, Collinsville, Proserpine and Mackay have learnt to perform their dialysis at home.|

The $408 million redevelopment of Mackay Base Hospital is part of a major expansion of health services for the north Queensland community.
The redeveloped hospital, covering almost 40,000 square metres, is being designed to meet the projected growth in demand for health services out to 2020/2021, thus, will increase its bed capacity to 318 beds, from the current 160 beds, all but doubling its current capacity.
The hospital is a vital component in Queensland Health's vision to deliver state-of-the-art health facilities and services that cater for the extraordinary population growth in the region.
The redeveloped Mackay Base Hospital will be equipped with leading edge technology to assist staff to provide the highest level of care and comfort to our patients.
