FIPC Research: Falls Tools Project - Queensland Stay On Your Feet®

During 2010/11, Queensland’s Falls Injury Prevention Program conducted a controlled clinical trial called the Falls Tools Trial (HREC/10/QPCH/89). The aim of this research was to develop, trial and evaluate the clinical value of an evidence-based Falls Assessment and Management Plan and a Post Fall Clinical Pathway across a variety of wards and services in hospitals, residential aged care and community settings.

These tools were designed using current evidence-based scientific literature, Australian Commission Falls Prevention Best Practice Guidelines and National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. In addition, there was an extensive state-wide consultation process with clinicians.

The trial involved a three-four month intervention period from end 2010 to early 2011 with pre- and post- assessment via a randomised clinical chart audit (n = 821 charts). Feedback on the usability of tools was also collected from staff and clients using pre- and post- implementation surveys.

Key results from the trial included:

  • increased identification of key falls risk factors
  • a statistically significant increase in documentation of initial interventions and actions, falls prevention interventions, frequency of initial post-fall observations, neuro observations for suspected head injuries and/or unwitnessed falls, and
  • improvements in time taken to notify medical staff of a fall and overall documentation.

The tools have been approved by the Falls Injury Prevention Collaborative, the Tools Trial Project Management Group and finalised with Statewide Clinical Forms.
