Otago Exercise Programme - Qld Stay On Your Feet

The Otago Exercise Programme (OEP) was designed by the Falls Prevention Research Group at the University of Otago Medical School in New Zealand. Research demonstrates that the OEP reduces falls by an overall 35%. 1,2,3,4

The OEP consists of a series of progressive leg-strengthening and balance-retraining exercises and a walking plan. The programme involves four home visits over the first two months, a home visit at 6 months and a telephone call every month between visits, concluding with a final home visit at 12 months. There is strong evidence to support use of the OEP to prevent falls in those aged 80 years and older who are living independently in the community, and who have had a fall or been assessed as at risk of a fall. The program relates to every day functional activities, and focuses on the key falls risk factors of strength and balance.

The OEP can be delivered by physiotherapists or a range of health professionals under physiotherapy supervision. It has also been successfully delivered as part of a multiple intervention falls prevention program such as Stepping On.

Otago Exercise Programme comes to Queensland

In association with the Auckland University of Technology, Queensland Health conducted several OEP training workshops, with 13 OEP Master Trainers now qualified and available to offer local training, supervision and support throughout Queensland.
