The review of the Mental Health Act 2000 was commenced by the Department of Health in June 2013. The review identified a range of opportunities to improve the mental health legislative scheme in Queensland to ensure its currency with clinical practice, human rights principles and legislative drafting practices.
The consultation phase on the draft Bill closed in June this year, and resulted in 97 submissions from a wide spectrum of stakeholders. All submissions were reviewed and considered prior to the revised Bill being introduced into Parliament on 17 September 2015.
The Bill has now been referred to the Health and Ambulance Services Committee which will scrutinise the policies contained in it.
