Aurukun camp visit

8 January 2020

The following statement may be attributed to Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Ms Bev Hamerton.

Three Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service staff will accompany a multi-agency team today to visit a camp near Aurukun housing people displaced by the recent violence in the community.

We are contributing two nurses and a mental health worker to the multi-agency team that will visit the camp under police escort to assess conditions there and establish what healthcare and other needs must be provided over the coming days.

We will also work with other agencies to determine the future disposition of the camp.

In the meantime, we continue to deliver emergency and routine health care services to the local community in a safe and secure environment from within the Aurukun Primary Healthcare Centre without restriction.

People requiring treatment will continue to receive it.

We are and will continue to work closely with police. Ensuring the safety and security of our staff is a top priority.
