The Townsville Hyperbaric Medicine Unit (HMU) is the only public facility in Queensland outside Brisbane. The chamber provides treatment with 100% per cent oxygen or other gas mixtures at selected pressures greater than atmospheric for the approved conditions below.
Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) treatment is indicated for the primary or adjunctive therapy of the following conditions:
Some of these are encountered as emergencies and require immediate HMU consultation. Diving is a popular sport in North Queensland and a significant number of cases of decompression illness are referred to the HMU each year.
For patients presenting with unusual or unexplainable symptoms and a recent history of diving, a diagnosis of DCI should be considered.
The Hyperbaric Unit is located at the Western entrance on the ground floor of the
Acute Block opposite the Rehabilitation Unit and adjacent to the Emergency
Department. If in doubt, ask the volunteers for directions.
