Privacy and confidentiality

When you receive a service at any of the hospitals or ambulatory services in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS), confidential medical records will be kept about your condition and treatment. This may include results from tests, x-rays and scans.  These records may be in paper or electronic formats.  This information is available to your treating doctors and other health care providers e.g. physiotherapists, pharmacists, to ensure you receive the treatment and medications you need.  Information about your stay in hospital will be provided to your nominated general practitioner (GP).  It is important that you tell us who your GP is, however if you aren’t sure we will send information at your or a GPs request, to ensure you receive appropriate follow up care.

Your health information will only be discussed or made available to those who are involved in your care or where you have provided specific consent for its release, e.g. WorkCover claims, insurance claims, etc. Some government organisations may be legally allowed to access your information for the recording of births and deaths, infectious disease or other public health matters.

As a health agency, we are bound by statutory obligations contained in the Information Privacy Act 2009, the Right to Information Act 2009 and the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 which all require strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality provisions.
