Neonatal Unit

About the Neonatal Unit

The Townsville Hospital Neonatal Unit, comprising of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the special care nursery (SCN), is the only level six tertiary referral centre for newborns in Queensland, north of Brisbane. The unit is currently in the process of redevelopment which will lead the unit to having 50-cot spaces across the NICU and SCN. The Neonatal Unit provides care for premature babies, babies requiring surgery and those infants requiring various types of ventilation (high-frequency ventilation, synchronised IMV, and ventilation with inhaled nitric oxide).

The unit aims to provide exceptional family-centred care, where parents are actively encouraged to participate in all aspects of their child’s care. The new, refurbished unit will provide rooms that enable parents to visit and interact with their baby in a comfortable and family friendly environment. The unit offers mothers the opportunity to express their breast milk for their ill babies by providing electric breast pumps. The unit also provides families with breastfeeding advice through qualified lactation consultants and readily available written material. A separate parents’ lounge and kitchenette is available to provide somewhere for parents and family to relax. There is also a dedicated parents’ computer situated within this area so families can share photos and keep in contact with family and friends while their child is in the unit.

Visitors and visiting hours

Dealing with sick babies means that hygiene is of the utmost importance in the unit. Before entering the nursery, it is an essential requirement that all families and their visitors wash their hands thoroughly at the entry sinks (instructions are located above the sink). Lockers are provided for visitors to securely store their personal belongings while in the unit to reduce the risk of introducing infection. Please note that the only children allowed entry into the unit are siblings. Parents and siblings have 24-hour visiting access. Parents are asked to restrict friends/relatives visiting, as per the unit’s visiting guidelines as an infection prevention measure.
