Cardiac Investigations Unit - Townsville Hospital and Health Service


The Cardiac Investigations Unit undertakes several procedures including:

  • ECGs
  • Transthoracic Echocardiograms
  • Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms
  • Exercise Stress Echocardiograms
  • Transoesphagel Echocardiograms
  • Exercise stress tests
  • Tilt table testing
  • 24 and 48-hour Holter monitoring
  • Pacemaker clinics
  • Cardiac Event Monitoring (seven days)
  • 24-hour Ambulatory Blood-Pressure Monitoring

Referral Procedures

Cardiology referral form - Please complete electronically before printing and faxing.

No appointments are required for an inpatient or outpatient ECG. Patients are required to present to the department with their completed ECG request form.

Inpatient ECGs will be performed by the cardiac scientist and placed in the patients chart for review and reporting by the referring doctor. These can be performed bedside if the patient is too unwell to present to the department.

Outpatient ECGs will be performed by the cardiac scientist and then a copy placed an envelope to be given to the patient. The patient is to then give the copy to his/her referring doctor for reporting.


For all tests listed below, the referring doctor should fax the appropriate Cardiology referral form directly to the department. The patient will then be notified of a time and date for the test.

  • Transthoracic Echocardiogram (echo)
  • Transoesphagel Echocardiogram (TOE)
  • Exercise stress tests (EST)
  • Exercise Stress Echocardiogram (ESE)
  • Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram (DSE)
  • 24 or 48-hour ambulatory ECG monitoring (Holter monitors)
  • 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Cardiac Event Monitoring (seven days)
  • Pacemaker clinic
