Gastroenterology and Endoscopy

Overview

The Department of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy provides a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service for patients with gastrointestinal and hepatic conditions. The department accepts referrals from Ayr, Charters Towers, Ingham and Palm Island.

Services provided

  1. General gastroenterology clinics
  2. Hepatitis and Liver clinics
  3. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic
  4. Outreach endoscopy services in Ingham, Ayr, Charters Towers and Mount Isa
  5. Outreach Out patient clinic services in the Townsville Correctional Centre
  6. Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures
  7. Endoscopic Ultrasound
  8. Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (and jejunal feeding)
  9. Oesophageal manometry and ambulatory 24-hour pH monitoring
  10. Access to magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)  through medical imaging
  11. Multidisciplinary team meetings with radiology, pathology, oncology and surgery

The Department is also actively involved in several research projects.  The registrar post is recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for higher training in gastroenterology within Queensland

Referral Process

Internal - A request is made by sending an Endoscopy Request Form to the Endoscopy Unit. If the referral is of an urgent nature, the gastroenterology registrar needs to be contacted and the case discussed. An appointment will be made for the patient and the patient will be contacted by phone or post.

External - A referral is required addressed to the Gastroenterology Department using the standardised referral forms that is available to GPs through the GP Network. These forms contain the minimum data set required for appropriate triaging. This can be faxed to the above number or posted. For bulk billing purposes, the referral should be addressed to any of the consultants listed on the referral form. The referral should contain all relevant patient details, ie date of birth, address, contact phone number, a full patient history including list of medications, past medical history and family history. An appointment will be made for the patient and posted to the patient. If the referral is of an urgent nature, the patient will be contacted by telephone.
