Intensive Care Unit Townsville Hospital - Resource directory

Overview

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 14 bed level 6 tertiary ICU.  ICU manages all specialities apart from burns and transplants. The unit is run by medical and nursing staff that have advanced qualifications in Critical care. We welcome visitors outside our medical rounds which occur daily 8am-12pm.

POD 1 is our general ICU side where critically ill patients are more likely to need care for more than 24 hours e.g. Trauma.

POD 2 is our post-operative surgical side used mainly for patients who need overnight care e.g. post cardiac surgery.

Our paediatric patients are managed in Paediatric Intensive Care which located in POD 3 on the ICU floor.

The unit is a member of the State Wide Intensive Care Network and its performance is measured against all the other level 6 units in the state.

The unit runs a transition to intensive care for novice ICU nursing staff who then may choose to continue to post graduate studies in selected universities.
