Overview

Queensland Health Oral Health Services provide a wide range of dental services to eligible patients within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service and to visiting eligible Queensland residents. The service covers an area of over 149,500 square kilometres ( 8.5 per cent of the  state) with geographic boundaries stretching from Kennedy and Cardwell in the north, to Home Hill in the south, and  Richmond in the west, and includes Magnetic Island and the Palm Island Group.

Oral Health Services across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service are provided from:

  • Community/hospital-based clinics in Townsville, Palm Island, Ayr, Charters Towers, Hughenden, Richmond, Cardwell and Ingham.
  • Townsville Correctional Centre.
  • Cleveland Youth Detention Centre.
  • Fixed School clinics in Townsville, Ayr and Ingham.
  • Mobile clinics based in Townsville, Ayr, Charters Towers and Ingham and servicing schools within the boundaries of the Townsville Hospital and Health Service.
  • The Townsville Hospital Clinic

The mission of the service is to promote, maintain and improve the health and wellbeing of eligible clients through the pursuit of excellence in ethical standards, health promotion, delivery of services and resource management. Services provided include:

a. the promotion of Oral Health through personal or public preventive action, including the education of the community in regard to the protection of rural health and
b. the prevention of oral disease and the diagnosis and treatment and/or referral of all forms of oral disease and conditions, including:

  • Comprehensive general dental  for eligible patients of all ages;
  • Emergency dental services for eligible patients, including denture repairs;
    (Call centre triage assisted - telephone 1300 300 850 Monday – Friday      7.30am–4.00pm, excepting public holidays)
  • Dental Hygiene services;
  • Orthodontics (for priority cases);

Eligibility

Adults

Public funded Oral Health Services are available to Queensland resident who are in receipt of benefits from either a:

  • Health Care Card (HCC);
  • Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) issued by Centrelink;
  • Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) issued by Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs;
  • Queensland Seniors’ Card (QDC);
  • Commonwealth Senior Health Card (QSC)

For residents issued with these cards and currently receiving benefits, eligibility is extended to their dependants named on the card.

A current card showing your name and Queensland residential address must be presented to reception staff upon arrival for your appointment. Identification may also be required.

Colour-coded Veterans’ Cards and Medicare Cards are not accepted.

Children

For children to be eligible to receive Queensland Health publicly funded oral health services they must meet the following criteria:

  • Queensland resident children four years of age or older who have not completed Year 10 of secondary school are universally eligible for publicly funded oral health care
  • Children younger than four years of age and those who have completed Year 10 of secondary school are eligible if they are dependants of current concession care holders or hold a concession card themselves.

Emergency Dental Services

If an eligible patient requires emergency treatment they should telephone the Oral Health Call Centre on 1300 300 850.   The Call Centre operator will take patient details and ask a series of questions regarding the patient’s emergent oral health needs.  The operator will then allocate an appointment time and advise the patient which clinic to attend. Patients are requested to present at that clinic ten minutes prior to the appointment time.

Eligible patients with a denture problem should also contact the Oral Health Call Centre on 1300 300 850 in the first instance. Repairs are usually available for collection at 4pm the same day.

NOTE: The number of emergency patients who can be seen on any day depends upon the number of dentists available. 

School Dental Services

Services are provided to school children from four years of age to Year 10, using a number of mobile dental vans and fixed clinics at schools throughout the district. The mobile vans and fixed clinics can be contacted by telephoning + 61 7 4433 9900 or the local General Enquiries number listed below.

Complex Dental Services

Complex dental services including certain types of dentures and crowns are provided in specific cases, with the specific approval of the Director of Oral Health Services/Principal Dental Officer. Treatment under general anaesthesia is also available.

Referral Procedure

  • If immediate treatment is required, telephone 1300 300 850. The clinics are not open on weekends or on public holidays.
  • By appointment system for general treatment, if eligible.
