Childrens Ward - Resource Directory

Located on the ground floor of The Townsville Hospital the children's ward is a 23-bed ward admitting children up to the age of 16yrs caring for all types of injury and illness. We have five staff paediatricians, two visiting paediatricians and two paediatric surgeons who work on the ward with trained children's nurses.

The ward serves not only Townsville children, but also covers a wide geographical area providing hospital services to children throughout the district as well as from other regions.

Families requiring emergency accommodation have access to Ronld McDonald House Chartities and Australian Red Cross located opposite the main building of The Townsville Hospital.

The ward is a secure area. Visitors have open access visiting all day until 8pm and parents are welcome to sleep over night at the child's bedside. A sofa bed or mattress is placed at the side of the child's bed. Parents also have access to shower and toilet facilities, there is also a parent's lounge within the ward, a microwave, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities are provided. No children are allowed in this area.

The ward works very closely with a multidisciplinary team, including paediatric social workers, pysiotherapists and occupational therapists. We also work closely with other children's services such as Child, Youth and Family Health and Children’s Development Services. We provide a Paediatric Nursing Outreach Service for children seven days per week, which facilitates early discharges and supports children and their families in the community where possible.

There is a school room for children on the ward. It is also available to siblings from outside the area. This service is provided by a teacher who works four days. The school is closed on Thursdays. The service is identified for children who have an anticipated stay of more than 4 days.
