Overview

The Townsville Hospital's Rehabilitation Service has an experienced multidisciplinary team that focuses on rehabilitation for individuals recovering from a variety of conditions.

The variety of conditions can include:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Amputation
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Orthopaedic injuries/surgeries
  • Reconditioning after trauma or major surgery/prolonged illness

Service setting

Inpatient rehabilitation is conducted in a ward setting which has inpatient beds and an independent living unit (ILU). The ILU provides an opportunity for the patient and their family/carer to simulate their home environment and routine prior to being discharged from hospital.

The Townsville Hospital Rehabilitation Outpatient Service has multiple outpatient clinics providing specialist assessment and management.  These clinics are:

  • Stroke
  • General rehabilitation
  • Spasticity
  • Amputee
  • Pedorthotist (Bootmaker)
  • Prosthetics
  • Memory
  • Spinal

The Day Rehabilitation Service is a multidisciplinary team offering goal directed rehabilitation. Rehabilitation programs are designed to maximise functional independence via a goal oriented program, which may be conducted in a group environment or individual appointments.

Outreach services are provided to Mackay, Mt Isa and Cairns region via outreach medical clinics and as part of the North Queensland Spinal Service.

Referral process

Referral must be addressed to the Rehabilitation Consultant and can be in a letter format or on a referral form.   Email is the preferred delivery method. 

On receipt of the referral an appointment or review of the patient will be completed at the earliest convenience.
