Referral Procedure

In general, women requiring antenatal care are referred from their general practitioner to The Townsville Hospital for pregnancy care.  Self-referral is acceptable for a first visit to the antenatal clinic.  You will be sent a booking-in appointment and provided with information about the antenatal care services that are available.  Discussion about your ongoing care will occur during your appointment.

Women and children requiring other specialist services will need a referral from a medical officer.  Most usually this will be obtained from the general practitioner or another specialist.

We understand how difficult it is for you, GP’s and practice managers to keep track of changing service providers.  Thus unless there is a preference for a specific provider, please ensure referrals are addressed to the person named for the speciality as listed below.  This will enable the Director of each department to ensure that the referral is allocated to the most appropriate specialist so that you get seen as quickly as possible.

The Women’s and Children’s clinics require a minimum amount of information to enable them to efficiently assess referrals and provide an appointment in a timely manner to the most appropriate health practitioner for their specific needs.  Unfortunately when a referral does not have the required information Women’s and Children’s clinics are obliged to ask for the missing information before the request can processed.  A referral form has been developed to assist medical officers provide all the information required.

Women's and Children's Clinic will send out a letter to the provided postal address once the referral has been accepted and an appointment date and time scheduled.  The provided mobile phone number will be used to ask patients to confirm their appointment and to send them a reminder text 1-2 days before the appointment.

Wait lists are often extensive and thus it is most important that patients ensure that they attend their appointments or notify of their inability to attend so that another person may be offered the opportunity.  Patients who fail to attend an appointment without notice are usually removed from wait lists and advised to return to their General Practitioner for further care.

Women's and Children’s clinics are situated on the ground floor, and easily located by following the signage.
