New Cardiac Investigations Unit offers high-quality heart care close to home
A new Cardiac Investigation Unit (CIU) is now open at Hervey Bay Hospital, allowing better access to early intervention for heart conditions and better health outcomes for Fraser Coast patients.
The new unit is thanks to a partnership between Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service and GenesisCare, one of the largest private providers of cardiology services in Australia.
Minister for Health Steven Miles said the new service meant that people across the Fraser Coast would have access to state-of-the-art cardiology services.
“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to expanding specialist services in regional areas and making sure all Queenslanders can access world-class care,” Minister Miles said.
“As our population continues to rapidly grow and age, particularly in Wide Bay, we know the development of cardiac services is crucial to meeting the health needs of our community, now and into the future.
“The new unit will be an important tool in early intervention and improving health outcomes for the whole community.
“When it comes to health care, this Government is delivering for Queenslanders across the state, maintaining current services and adding them where possible.”
Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said patients now had access to a full suite of non-invasive cardiac testing services.
“People in Maryborough and the Fraser Coast have had to travel to access these services and now they can access them close to home,” he said.
“These services include echocardiographs, stress echocardiographs, stress testing and Holter monitoring.”
The services in the unit will be complemented by daily cardiology ward rounds, which will enhance cardiac care for inpatients.
GenesisCare’s General Manager for Cardiology in Queensland, Michelle Miller, said: “The new CIU at Hervey Bay Hospital will provide rapid access to cardiac testing services, improving diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and the overall quality of life for those in need of cardiology care in our community.
“We are incredibly proud to be partnering with Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service to deliver this vital care for the region and to be officially opening this service today.”
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Board Chair Peta Jamieson said the new Cardiac Investigations Unit was
a great demonstration of delivering more services locally – a key aim of WBHHS’s strategic plan, Care
Comes First…Through Patients’ Eyes.
“With this unit, our patients will be able to access more cardiac testing services on the Fraser Coast and
will also have access to some interventional procedures in Bundaberg, reducing the cost and travel
burden for them and their families,” she said.
“This will make a meaningful difference to patients, who previously have had to travel significant
distances for care.”
GenesisCare Senior Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiac Investigation Unit in Hervey Bay, Dr Angus
Thompson, said: “For patients presenting with heart disease symptoms, early detection is absolutely vital
to mitigating the associated risks of heart disease, such as heart attack and heart failure.
“Wide Bay locals now have access to cardiac testing at their doorstep and we are hoping to see a vast
improvement in the rates of early diagnosis and outcomes for patients with heart disease.”
The Hervey Bay CIU will offer the following services:
- Stress echocardiography
- Dobutamine stress echocardiography
- Exercise stress testing
- 24-hour Holter monitoring
- Access to, and interpretation of, Cardiac CT Angiography.
