Rachel, Team Leader of BreastScreen Queensland's client registry

Rachel, Team Leader

I have been in this role since April, 2003. The job came up and I just jumped at it. I love what I do and the team I work with. We're a small team of four, soon to be five, and I'm the team leader.

We manage the client database – there's just under 800,000 women on there - and all their personal details and records. It's a big responsibility and a high level of quality assurance and accuracy is required. There are lots of business rules about changing and updating information and the rules and processes have to be understood by every member of the team. We are very protective of the information we hold because it's a privilege to be entrusted. You can't take that lightly. I always think of it in terms of how I would like or expect information to be held or managed about myself.

We also coordinate all the letters that go out as well as any of the calls that come in when a woman calls BreastScreen on the 13 20 50 number. Yes, it can be upsetting when you have a lady on the phone and hear about her battle with breast cancer. I love the ones where a woman is a survivor and you hear that they are now doing well. So, aside from having other business skills, it's a job requiring empathy. About 80 per cent of calls are women making appointments.

The big thing that stands out to me about working for BreastScreen Queensland is that everyone is highly passionate about looking after the women who go there. It always comes down to the client.
