The Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District has embarked upon a Service and Master planning project to consider the future service and infrastructure needs of the district over the next 10 years.
A fundamental component of that planning project is to consult as widely as possible with interested stakeholders and the general public to establish what they think their communities’ needs are for the future.
A private consultancy, Aurora Projects Pty Ltd, has been awarded the contract to develop the Service and Master plan for the newly amalgamated Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District which comprises the old Cairns, Innisfail and Tablelands health service districts.

Aurora Projects will focus on understanding the population health needs of the health service district and identify what services are and should be delivered to Cairns and Hinterland communities.
A separate Master Plan will be developed after the Service Plan and will make recommendations on the facilities and equipment required to meet the district’s needs for the next 10 years.
“We want to let people know we are not just standing still in the face of the rapid growth this large region is experiencing and the pressure that growth is putting on our existing resources, staff and facilities,’’ Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District Manager Angela Beckett said.
“The Service Plan will consider how Queensland Health and other health service providers of differing size and capability will work together to offer co-ordinated services. It will also make recommendations regarding the reconfiguration of health services at Queensland Health facilities to deliver safe, effective and responsive services.

“The Service Plan will describe the strategies and actions required to improve the health of people living in the Cairns region.
“In looking at future facility needs, the Master Plan will take into consideration the services to be provided, as described in the Service Plan, as well as local demographics, future trends, existing facilities and recurrent costs,’’ Ms Beckett said.
Ms Beckett said Aurora Projects had started work on the plan in May, with a draft district Service Plan now expected by September and a draft Master Plan to be ready by late October.
A series of public consultations will be held around the region, with the dates, times and venues to be advertised locally, at which people can have their say on their community’s future health needs.
