Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care & Perioperative Medicine

Purpose of role

  • The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to patients of Cairns Hospital, and to participate in training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.  The position may be required to provide clinical care to other hospitals within the hospital and health service (HHS) and adjoining HHS, such as: Atherton, Cooktown, Innisfail, Mareeba, Mossman, Thursday Island and Weipa Hospitals.

Key skill requirements / competencies

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the relevant Consultants, initiate, maintain and be responsible for the clinical care of patients
  • Supervise the day to day activities of more junior medical staff to ensure that appropriate standards of care are maintained and that junior medical staff are trained to adequately fulfil their duties
  • Conduct day to day review of patients
  • To ensure comprehensive, accurate and concise medical records are maintained for patients with an appropriate signed and dated legible entry in the patient's medical record on every attendance upon a patient.  The Medical Officer should also print his/her name under the signature
  • To provide assistance with outpatient clinics as directed by the Consultant to whom assigned.
  • To arrange investigations, surgical treatment, medical treatment and discharge as directed by the Consultant to which assigned
  • To ensure that discharge summaries and other correspondence are completed with minimum delay and that all such correspondence is complete prior to leaving the unit
  • Maintain good communications with all areas and disciplines within the health service and with local medical practitioners to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the hospital
  • Ensure and review the quality of patient care by participation in clinical audits and quality programs
  • Participate in the provision of an on-call roster or a shift roster to provide services out of hours, at night and on weekends, after a standard period of assessment, as directed by the relevant Director
  • To participate in Outreach visits as required by the Director or relevant Consultant

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage the administrative requirements of the hospital and patient care including ensuring discharge summaries and medico-legal correspondence is completed with minimal delay
  • Be responsible to the relevant Director/Consultant for such administrative tasks as are necessary
  • Be aware of and adhere to all Queensland Health and hospital policies and procedures

Educational Responsibilities

  • To participate in continual professional improvement and medical education as follows:
  • To participate in all required clinical and educational meetings undertaken by the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care & Perioperative Medicine
  • To achieve the Department's competency milestones for skills, knowledge and attributes, appropriate to level of experience
  • Assist with case presentations at teaching meetings when instructed
  • Provide leadership and teaching to the resident medical staff allocated to the Department
  • To participate in undergraduate teaching of medical students

Qualifications / Professional registration / Other requirements

  • Current registration or eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority
  • Anaesthetics and Intensive Care experience and qualification preferred

Division of Medicine

Purpose of role

  • This position is ideally suited to a Principal House Officer in Medicine.  The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to the patients of Cairns Hospital and maybe required to go to other locations as listed within the HHS: Atherton Hospital; Babinda Hospital; Mossman Multi-Purpose Health Service; Gordonvale Memorial Hospital; Innisfail Hospital; Mareeba Hospital; Tully Hospital; Yarrabah Hospital; Thursday Island Hospital to participate in clinics in which the Principal House Officer is employed
  • To assist in the provision of a high quality services to patients requiring medical services
  • Comprehensive post graduate training program provided
  • Sub-speciality rotations available

Key skill requirements / competencies

  • Demonstrated clinical experience and skills in medicine, for a wide range of procedures
  • Demonstrated willingness to participate in teaching at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels and demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education including maintenance of personal knowledge and skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a Member in a multidisciplinary approach to service provision
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of quality improvement and to the principles of continuous quality improvement and review

Qualifications / Professional registration / Other requirements

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration with the appropriate registration authority, including any necessary endorsements, to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of duty.  Current registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is mandatory
  • Qualifications in Medicine, Successful completion of at least 2 years post registration training

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department

Purpose of role

  • The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to patients of Cairns Hospital and to participate in training in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the Cairns Hospital Obstetric and Gynaecology Service

Purpose of role

  • The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to patients of Cairns Hospital and to participate in training in the particular speciality in which the Registrar/Principal House Officer is employed
  • The position may be required to provide clinical care to other facilities within the HHS being as follows: Cairns Hospital; Atherton Hospital; Babinda Hospital; Innisfail Hospital; Tully Hospital; 
    Mossman Multi-Purpose Health Service; Gordonvale Memorial Hospital; Mareeba Hospital; Yarrabah Hospital

  • To participate in country relieving as required.  Up to 3 months may be spent relieving in other hospitals in the region

Paediatric Unit

Purpose of role

  • The primary function of the position is to provide high quality clinical care to patients out of Cairns Hospital and to participate in the delivery of services through Cairns Hospital Paediatric Service

  • This position requires the incumbent to operate a class 'C' motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided before commencement of duty

Sexual Mental Health Services

Purpose of role

  • To provide Sexual Health, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), sexually transmitted infection (STI) and Hepatitis B & C medical services, at an advanced level of service delivery and program management that focuses on the prevention, early detection and management of sexual health problems.  To work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in partnership with community based organisations and other government departments.  This is a training position towards the Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine,  Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Key skill requirements / competencies

  • Ability to deliver culturally appropriate sexual health clinical care (incorporating sexually transmissible infections, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B & C, and fertility control) in a specialist environment working within a collaborative practice model of care
  • Experience in other infectious diseases, sexual counselling, health education, epidemiology, and computer literacy are desirable
  • Ability to provide leadership, and to assist in training staff and students
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate education activities for individuals and groups
  • Ability to apply well developed interpersonal and communication skills within a multi-disciplinary environment, including negotiation, consultation and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of quality improvement processes and activities and ability to apply validated research to clinical practice
  • Knowledge of contemporary Human Resource Management issues at boththe broad and specific level, with particular references to workplace Health and Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-discrimination

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and current registration with the Medical Board of Australia is mandatory
  • Enrolment as a Trainee (or willingness to become a Trainee) with the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine of the Royal Australasian of Physicians
