Ryan's Rule applies to all patients admitted to any Queensland Health public hospitals. This includes the emergency department and in some Hospital in the Home (HITH) services.

Queensland Health developed Ryan's Rule after the death of Ryan Saunders, who died in 2007. Ryan died from an undiagnosed streptococcal infection, which led to Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Ryan's parents worried he was getting worse and didn't feel their concerns were acted on in time.

Ryan's Rule is an escalation process to help minimise a similar event happening.
