The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service includes nine hospitals, 11 primary health sites and nine community health centres.
We serve a permanent population of more than 220,000 residents in an area that is approximately 142,000 square kilometres (twice the size of Tasmania).
The Cairns Hospital is the primary referral hospital for Far North Queensland. Referrals are from as far north as the Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait Islands and Papua New Guinea, and west to Mount Isa and the Gulf of Carpentaria
The Health Service is 95 percent self-sufficient, with only a small number of high-level acute services being provided in Townsville and Brisbane.
Our staff are a part of the community we serve, and we strongly believe that health outcomes are enhanced by involving our community in the planning and evaluation of local health services.
About the location
Cairns is Queensland's northern-most city, with a population of over 160,000 and growing. The region is a world famous tourist destination where two World Heritage areas meet - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.
Locals and tourists alike can enjoy a trek through tropical rainforest, visit coral-fringed islands, snorkel or dive on the Great Barrier Reef, explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and indulge in the thriving cafes; and restaurant scene.
The Cairns and Hinterland region includes the spectacular scenic coastal drives to Port Douglas, Mission Beach on the Cassowary Coast, and the stunning rural landscapes and waterfall circuit of the Atherton Tablelands.
Cairns and Hinterland locals appreciate the relaxed tropical lifestyle, outdoor living, and access to excellent schools, university campuses, sporting facilities and an international airport.
