Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service Profile
Cooktown Multipurpose Health Service (MPHS) is a 24-hour facility which provides emergency, acute and residential aged care.
The facility comprises two emergency beds, 16 acute beds, 11 residential aged care beds, and can also accommodate patients with palliative care and respite requirements.
Cooktown provides a range of allied health services, such as chronic disease prevention and management, dental clinics, outpatients, medical imaging, physiotherapy, social work, dietetics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, diabetes educators, aged care, home and community care, mental health and child health outreach services.
Cooktown has an eight-chair, nurse-assisted renal dialysis unit that operates as a satellite service delivered by the Cairns Hospital's Renal Medicine Department for Cook Shire clients.
In 2014 a birthing service commenced at the MPHS for women from the Cooktown region who are assessed as having a low-risk pregnancy. This is after an absence of birthing services for 11 years. The region’s midwifery group practice services were also expanded.
Tele-chemotherapy programs commenced at Cooktown, Weipa and Thursday Island in 2014/15. Low risk cancer patients no longer need to travel to Cairns for chemotherapy.
Financial assistance is available through the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme to eligible patients who need to travel to other hospitals for procedures and tests not available locally.
Telehealth services are available for linking with other facilities via video-conference for patients.
