New Mapoon Primary Health Care Centre Profile
![]() | New Mapoon is an area south of Seisia and west of Bamaga at the tip of Cape York Peninsula. New Mapoon is one of the five communities which collectively form the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) in the northern most region of Cape York. Injinoo, Umagico, Seisia and Bamaga communities are the other NPA communities. The NPA is very isolated for parts of the year. Far North Queensland's wet season typically runs from around December to May and is usually characterised by heavy rainfall which regularly cuts access to the area. The wet season is followed by the dry season, with the timing and intensity of this change often varying year to year. New Mapoon has a total population of approximately 289 people, with approximately 60% of the population identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. |
![]() | The New Mapoon Primary Health Care Centre is managed by a small primary health care team consisting of Indigenous health workers. The clinic encourages walk-ins and also sees patients by appointment. |
![]() | This health centre manages primary preventative health care such as chronic disease care, annual adult health care checks and provides a limited range of primary health care. Acute presentations are referred to Bamaga Hospital. Other programs are delivered from the clinic on a scheduled basis to include men's and women's health, maternal and child health and promoting a quality lifestyle. |
![]() | Financial assistance is available through the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme to eligible patients who need to travel to other hospitals for procedures and tests not available locally. |
![]() | Telehealth services are available via Bamaga Primary Health Care Centre and Bamaga Hospital for linking with other facilities via teleconference for patients. |
