Ugar (Stephen Island) is situated in the Eastern Cluster of the Torres Strait Islands. The other islands in the cluster are Erub and Mer. It is home to the region’s smallest community of about 50 people and 98% of the population identify as Indigenous. The island can only be accessed by helicopter or dinghy.

Stephen Island Primary Health Care Centre is managed by staff from nearby Mer (Murray Island) through a one day a week fly-in/fly-out clinic.

Financial assistance is available through the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme to eligible patients who need to travel to other hospitals for procedures and tests not available locally.
