We believe it is important to develop and invest in new models of care. This is so we can support the solution to a growing demand on Queensland’s health services and encourage continuity of care in the community.

Our GP with a Special Interest Program supports this by engaging GPs in our hospital and health services across a range of specialties.

The program provides GPs with the opportunity to work part-time in hospital outpatient clinics, in areas of special interest in. GPs work in clinics under the supervision of a consultant.

Specialities vary depending on need, and may include:

  • mental health
  • palliative care
  • immunology
  • dermatology
  • general surgery
  • vascular surgery
  • ENT
  • gynaecology
  • plastic surgery
  • vascular
  • respiratory
  • urology
  • ophthalmology
  • rheumatology.

The program leads to positive outcomes for patients, clinicians and Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service:

  • Patients benefit from shorter waiting times and streamlined care to the most appropriate clinician for their health needs.
  • Clinicians benefit from shared learning and upskilling, and improved communication.
  • Patients, Clinicians and the health service benefit from an efficient model of care that improves access and reduces long waits.
