1300 MH CALL and Acute Care Team

1300 MH CALL is a multidisciplinary Tele-Triage team that provides 24 hour specialist Mental Health care.  It provides a single point of entry to the mental health service, to assist the community of the Sunshine Coast with access to public mental health services through mental health clinicians who will determine an appropriate clinical response to the enquiry or referral. Any member of the community seeking a public mental health service can call the 1300 MH CALL (1300 64 22 55) referrals can be from anyone including:  Self-referral, families, carers, significant others, non-government organisations, General Practitioners and other Specialist and Professional health workers.

Within the Acute Care Team contact may occur in a variety of settings, the teams preferred option being the consumers own environment, other sites include a general practitioners surgery, community agencies or on site at the hospital. A Mental Health clinician is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to discuss new referrals and organise appropriate assessments. The Acute Care Team is a multi-disciplinary clinical team including Consultant Psychiatrists, Nursing, Social Workers, Psychologists and administrative staff.

This service is provided free of charge to Medicare eligible individuals.

Acute Mental Health Inpatient Units

Adult acute mental health inpatient service provides short to medium term inpatient assessment and treatment services for people experiencing serious episodes of mental illnesses, who are unable to be adequately supported in the community. Adult acute inpatient service aims to provide multidisciplinary specialist assessment, collaborative treatment, evidence-based best practice and skilled clinical interventions, clinical reviews and discharge planning within a safe, therapeutic and consumer friendly environment. The focus of care is on resilience, sharing responsibility for recovery and a partnership orientation between the consumer, carer, families and clinicians, with length of stay determined by multiple factors including the severity of the consumers’ condition, their response to treatment and their current support networks.

This service is provided free of charge to Medicare eligible individuals.

Inpatient Therapeutic Group Program
As part of the inpatient treatment program, engagement in therapeutic activities is offered. These activities are decided by the consumer and their clinical team.

Addiction Services Team

The Alcohol and Other Drug Team specialise in the treatment of substance use or misuse problems as well as alcohol and/or drug(s) dependence.

Referrals to the team can be made by:

  • Person who wants to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and drug use
  • Families and friend of the above
  • General Practitioners and specialists doctors
  • Health Practitioners
  • Private and non-government sector agencies
  • Government and non-government agencies

The Alcohol and Other Drug Team (AODT) is a service of the Mental Health and Addiction Services. The team assists people to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and drug use.

This service is provided free of charge to Medicare eligible individuals. Appointments are essential.

Child and Youth Mental Health Service

The Child and Youth Mental Health Service provides a free service to children and young people aged 0-18 who have severe and complex mental health problems and who live in the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service District. As a specialist team we work with children and young people who are experiencing:

  • Emotional problems such as severe anxiety and / or depression which may include disturbances of eating, sleeping, thinking, self- harming behaviour, thoughts and fears or withdrawal
  • Severe behavioural problems which cause disruption to family and interpersonal relationships
  • Symptoms of severe mental health problems, such as hallucinations, confused or delusional thinking, obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviour

In situations of acute need, parents / carers or young people can contact the Intake Team directly.  Referrals to the Service may also be made through a referring agent such as a general practitioner, guidance officer or youth worker.  In this case, the individual or parent / carer should also phone the Intake Worker to discuss the situation. The Intake Worker will talk with you about the problems and decide how or whether the Team can assist. The Service does not usually provide assessment reports for people who are taking legal action or reports for compensation purposes. If it is agreed that the Service is able to assist, an appointment will be offered at the earliest available time.

Our Team consists of administrative and clinical staff who come from a wide range of disciplines including:

All health professionals of the team are registered with the Australian Health Professional Registration Authority (AHPRA).

Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Team

The Consultation Liaison Psychiatry team may undertake mental health assessments to assist:

  • patients who are admitted to hospital for physical health reasons but are experiencing significant distress associated with their medical illness
  • patients admitted into the General Hospital setting who may have an existing mental health condition that require mental health input during their stay.

Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Services aim to improve the integration of mental health services into the general hospital system, providing specialist services to public health patients. Sunshine Coast Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Services aim to improve the integration of mental health services into the general hospital system, providing specialist services to public health patients. The Sunshine Coast Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Mental Health Service strives to create an environment of understanding, respect and empowerment for patients. Patients can be referred to the CL Mental Health Team by one of the doctors, nurses or healthcare professionals caring for them.

Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (CLP) Mental Health is staffed by specialist mental health doctors and nurses and is part of the Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Service. We work collaboratively with patients, family members and other service providers to develop individualised approaches to patient care.

Continuing Care Team

The Continuing Care Team specialise in the treatment of people 18 years and over who are affected by mental illness and who would benefit from a multidisciplinary service due to the intensive or complex nature of the care required. The majority of CCT consumers experience moderate to severe impairment in functioning due to mental illness and have difficulty accessing and maintaining psychosocial supports which facilitate community inclusion and maintain social functioning.

The team is located at two sites – Nambour and Maroochydore.
The team is accessible Monday to Friday - 8:00am to 4:30pm excluding public holidays.

Mental Health Clinicians are available after hours at 1300 MHCALL (1300 64 2255) to take your call if necessary. This will be relayed to your Case Manager the following business day. If your Case Manager is not available, there is a group of clinicians who will assist you as needed. Your Case Manager will inform you of which site to visit and which phone number to use.

Cultural Healing Team

The Cultural Healing team provide support to:

  • a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
  • a non-indigenous family member
  • living within the Sunshine Coast
  • adult and/or child or young person suffering from or at risk of a mental health issue
  • someone in need of social, emotional or cultural and or spiritual support.

The Cultural Healing Program respects the uniqueness and diversity of all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, practices and beliefs. We believe that a culturally appropriate and safe service provision is the best means of helping our people holistically.

The team offer support for mental health which takes into account people's physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual wellbeing; helping us to achieve our full potential as individuals, which will then bring about a healthier wellbeing for our community. It is a whole of life view and includes the cyclical concept of life­ death-life.

The Cultural Healing Program's staffing is a combination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health workers and mental health clinicians, who work together to triage, assess and support our mob; which ensures a safe and supportive clinical and cultural practice.

Eating Disorders Service

The Eating Disorder Service – Sunshine Coast (EDS-SC) provides assessment, care and treatment for people and their families affected by eating disorders.

These include:

  • Single session specialist consultation clinic;
  • Time limited individual therapy sessions for evidence based treatment of eating disorders.

Consumers eligible to access this service will be 18 years and above with disordered eating cognitions and/or behaviour.

This service is provided free of charge to Medicare eligible individuals.

How to access this service

Your GP will complete an EDS-SC referral form and send it to us.

We aim to see you as soon as we can. Once we receive your referral we will contact you as soon as an appointment is available.

While you are waiting for an appointment it is important to maintain contact with your GP to keep you medically safe.

Evolve Therapeutic Services

Evolve Therapeutic Service is a specialist service within Queensland Health that supports children and young people in the care of the Department of Communities (Child Safety Services) who have extreme and complex emotional and behavioural problems as well as their support network.

Referrals to Evolve Therapeutic Services are through a young persons Child Safety Officer. The Child Safety Officer can refer the child or young person to the Evolve Interagency Panel. If the referral is accepted a clinician from our team is allocated. This clinician then works in collaboration with the child or young person, Child Safety Officers, school personnel, carers, family and other key stakeholders (eg recognised entity) to plan, deliver and review therapeutic interventions for the child or young person and their support network.

The clinical team have a variety of professional backgrounds (such as Social Work, Psychology and Mental Health Nursing) and are experienced in assessing and treating children and young people with severe and complex emotional and behaviour problems.

Gympie Community Mental Health Team

The Gympie Mental Health Team offers a public mental health service for people in the Gympie Regional Shire. Particularly assisted are those people with mental disorders and serious mental health problems.  This includes people suffering from psychosis, both acute and persistent mood, anxiety or eating disorders, and those with situational crises which may lead to self-harm or inappropriate behaviour directed towards others.

Referrals to GMHT can be made through general practitioners, the Emergency Department of the Gympie General Hospital and community service agencies. Consumers can also self-refer, or be referred by a family member or friend.

The service consists of Child and Youth Mental Health, Adult Mental Health and Older Persons Mental Health Teams. The team is made up of clinical staff from a range of disciplines including psychologists, nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists, visiting psychiatrists and administration staff.

Homeless Health Outreach Team

The Homeless Health Outreach Team (HHOT) provides comprehensive assessment, care co-ordination and clinical intervention for homeless persons in the community who are experiencing mental illness. The service aims to minimise the health problems of people experiencing homelessness and contribute to the prevention and reduction of homelessness in Queensland through cross-sectoral collaboration, to facilitate access to the most appropriate supports. Services are provided to individuals who are: homeless, sleeping rough, in emergency accommodation, in specialist homelessness services or couch surfing.

We are a Mental Health multidisciplinary team which may include:

  • Occupational Therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Aboriginal health workers
  • Administrative support

We work collaboratively with other Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Service teams to ensure coordination of care. Other teams include the Acute Care Team, Continuing Care Team, Rehabilitation Services Team, Older Persons Mental Health Team, Child and Youth Mental Health Team, Gympie Mental Health Team and the Acute Inpatient Unit.

Older Persons Mental Health Team

The Older Persons’ Mental Health Team (OPMHT) is a community based service providing specialised mental health care for people over the age of 65:

  • Presenting with their first episode of mental illness
  • Dementia sufferers with severe behavioural or psychiatric symptoms
  • Longstanding mental illness with complications from age-related medical health problems

Referrals are accepted from General Practitioners following provisional pathology screening. Referrals are also accepted from doctors of other services and hospitals. Team members are happy to discuss referrals or to answer questions regarding the service.

We are a multidisciplinary team working towards the best outcomes for consumers.

  • Our community services are provided Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm
  • In-patient services operate across both Sunshine Coast Health Hospital sites, 24 hours a day

Rehabilitation Services

Community Care Unit (CCU)

The Community Care Unit is for people aged 18 years or older with a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. The Community Care Unit works with the support of other teams of the Mental Health and Addiction Service. The service aims to assist people who would benefit from daily support and rehabilitation, including developing living skills over a medium term time frame.

Referrals to CCU are received from other components of the Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Service or from out of area Mental Health Services. All referral information is gathered and coordinated by the Transitions Coordinator. The consumer needs to be aware of the referral and be involved in the process.

Mobile Intensive Rehabilitation Team (MIRT) services are provided to consumers of the Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Services, who are over 18 years of age and have complex needs that require more intensive and extended assistance, than is able to be provided by other components of the Service.

Referrals to CCU are received from other components of the Sunshine Coast Mental Health and Addiction Service, or from other mental health services.  All referral information is gathered and coordinated by the Transition Officer, based at the CCU. The consumer needs to be aware of the referral and be involved in the process.
