Nursing and midwifery graduate program

We offer a 6 to 12 month graduate program for newly qualified registered nurses and midwives. The program helps you develop your nursing and midwifery skills in a supportive learning environment. It includes:

  • a detailed orientation program
  • dedicated nurse educators and clinical coaches
  • clinical and simulation learning
  • study days
  • mentor and preceptor support.

We have 2 intakes each year in January and July. If your application is successful you'll work a minimum of 40 hours a fortnight, but you can work up to 76 hours.

We have nursing placements at all our hospitals and health service facilities except for Mount Perry. We have midwifery childbirth placements at Bundaberg and Hervey Bay hospitals.

We encourage you to apply for vacant jobs with us after you complete the program.

You can also use the program to meet some of the entry requirements for the Master of Clinical Nursing at Central Queensland University.

Clinical areas

You can do the program in one or two specialty areas including:

  • cardiac health and coronary care
  • community or prison health
  • coronary care
  • education and research
  • emergency medicine and intensive care
  • gastroenterological care
  • geriatric and palliative care
  • mental health
  • neonatal and paediatric care
  • orthopaedic care
  • perioperative and surgical care
  • rehabilitation
  • renal and oncology care
  • rural health.

Applications open in July and close in August. We hold interviews in September. Check the graduate program website for application dates and make sure you apply before the closing date.

You'll need to include your:

  • resume with all of your clinical placements and a cover letter
  • graduate summary and academic transcript.

Who can apply

To apply you need to have studied an undergraduate nursing course or graduate entry Master of Nursing course. You must also:

  • have completed your degree in the past 2 years or be due to complete your degree by March
  • be eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
  • not have worked as a full time nurse or midwife for more than 6 months.
