Growing Deadly Families Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Maternity Services Strategy 2019-2025

Investing in the health of mothers and babies is key to gaining long term sustainable improvements in the health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies have a better chance to a healthy start to life when their mothers are healthy and supported before and during pregnancy leading to increased likelihood of full-term pregnancies and babies being born at a healthy birthweight.

The Growing Deadly Families Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Maternity Services Strategy 2019-2025 (1.67 MB) sets out the vision that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies in Queensland are born healthy, into strong resilient families. To support this the aim of the Strategy is to ensure every woman in Queensland giving birth to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander babies, has access to high quality, clinical and culturally capable maternity services.

The Strategy focuses on valuing cultural traditions, values and beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and listening to the needs of their communities as essential elements to providing culturally focussed and safe maternal health services for mothers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies.

The following identifies the three key priority areas of the Strategy:

  1. Maternity services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families are co-designed and delivered with the community, in partnership with providers;
  2. All women in Queensland pregnant with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander babies have access to woman-centred, comprehensive and culturally capable maternity care; and
  3. A culturally capable workforce means more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all disciplines of maternity care.
