Our strategy
Our Growing Deadly Families maternity services strategy is helping us provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers the care and support they need before and during pregnancy. The aim of the strategy is to ensure every woman in Queensland giving birth to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander babies has access to high quality, clinical and culturally capable maternity services.
We aim to embed cultural traditions, values and beliefs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities in all our maternity and birthing services. Supporting healthy mothers leads to an increased likelihood of full term pregnancies and babies being born at a healthy birthweight. This improves First Nations peoples health outcomes to help prevent chronic disease throughout life.
Our priorities
We’re working to ensure:
- maternity services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families are co-designed and delivered with the community, in partnership with providers
- all women in Queensland with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander babies have access to woman-centred, comprehensive and culturally capable maternity care, including continuity of carer
- a culturally capable workforce and more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across all disciplines of maternity care.
