Work and Breastfeeding

Breastmilk is normal, healthy infant nutrition. This site is designed to assist women who choose to continue breastfeeding upon their return to work.

Importance of supporting breastfeeding at work

Breastfeeding is one of the most important contributors to infant health. Breastfeeding provides a range of benefits for an infant's growth, immune system as well as their growth and development. Exclusive breastfeeding to around six months of age gives the best nutritional start to infants and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and other health authorities.

Women who breastfeed experience health benefits. Along with those provided for the baby, these health benefits result in significant health cost savings to employers and the community in general.

Employers, line managers and colleagues who recognise the needs of breastfeeding women and provide active support, are likely to have improved working relationships and see increased employee productivity, with the women returning to work, and increased productivity, based on the following [1]

Queensland Health has a Work and Breastfeeding Policy that applies to all Queensland Health staff.

Queensland Health also has a sample work and breastfeeding agreement.
