The Australia New Zealand food standards system is a cooperative arrangement between Australia and New Zealand to develop and implement uniform food standards. The commencement of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) on 20 December 2002 throughout Australia and New Zealand, provides industry with greater choice in manufacturing new products while balancing that innovation with the provision of necessary consumer information.
The Code sets the standards for food labelling and composition, food safety and hygiene standards and fit-out of food premises as well as primary production standards for all States and Territories throughout Australia and New Zealand. The Food Act 2006 (the Act) requires compliance with the Code** and significant penalties apply under the Act for non-compliance with the Code.
