Food labelling, composition and advertising

Nearly all food for sale in Australia must contain certain information so that consumers can make informed choices about food. Food labelling requirements cover issues such as nutrition information, ingredient listing, percentage labelling, declaration of allergens and food identification.

There are specific labelling requirements under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) for most food products. There are also requirements under the Code relating to composition of food, for example, prohibition of additives to raw meat.

Queensland Health has developed the Label Buster guide to assist food businesses to comply with the labelling requirements under the Code, as well as industry-specific fact sheets for meat, seafood and bakery products in relation to the labelling and compositional requirements.

Label Buster contains an easy reference to the labelling standards of the Code, a checklist to assist in developing a food label and a comprehensive directory of where to get more information.

It is an offence to provide false or misleading information in relation to food for sale, on the product label, in connection with the food or in advertising material.

Queensland Health is committed to maintaining a safe and diverse food supply for consumers, while supporting industry with innovative approaches to product development.
