eLearning package for clinicians

For clinicians to become authorised under the Mental Health Act 2016 and to be able to comply with their obligations as an authorised doctor/psychiatrist or authorised mental health practitioner, clinicians must successfully complete a relevant eLearning course:

  • Authorised doctor/authorised psychiatrist course (13 modules)
Doctors or psychiatrists must successfully complete the 13 assessments at the end of each module to pass this course to be deemed competent and become eligible for appointment as an authorised doctor under the Mental Health Act 2016.
  • Authorised mental health practitioners course (8 modules)
Other clinicians are required to successfully complete the eight assessments at the end of each module to pass this course to be deemed competent and become eligible for appointment as an authorised mental health practitioner under the Mental Health Act 2016. Clinicians may also view the other five modules but are not required to complete the assessment at the end of the modules to be deemed competent or eligible for appointment as an authorised mental health practitioner.

The difference in the courses reflects the different roles and responsibilities that authorised doctors/authorised psychiatrists and authorised mental health practitioners have under the Mental Health Act 2016.

Both courses are hosted on the Learning Centre.

Refresher course

To ensure that authorised doctors/psychiatrists and authorised mental health practitioners maintain competency, the Mental Health Act 2016 refresher course must be successfully completed every two years for ongoing appointment as an authorised doctor/psychiatrist and authorised mental health practitioners with a single assessment at the end of the course.

This course is hosted on the Learning Centre.

Access for members of the public

To support community awareness of the Mental Health Act 2016 members of the public can access these eLearning courses.

It should be noted, however, that these courses do not cover all aspects of the Mental Health Act 2016 as they are primarily for clinicians who will undertake specific roles and responsibilities associated with being authorised doctors and authorised mental health practitioners.

As a member of the public you will need to contact qcmhlit@health.qld.gov.au to arrange for access to these courses.

You can otherwise read about the Mental Health Act 2016 more broadly online.
