Evaluation Framework

The Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR) was engaged by the Department of Health, Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch (MHAODB) in 2019 to develop and support the implementation of an Evaluation Framework for Jacaranda Place- The Queensland Adolescent Extended Treatment Centre (Jacaranda Place) to evaluate activities in line with the Adolescent Extended Treatment Model of Service.

Development of the Evaluation Framework was undertaken through an expert Advisory Group including senior medical and allied health staff, MHAODB and consumer and carer representatives.

The final endorsed Evaluation Framework relies on a number of existing systems to collect data, including the Consumer Integrated Mental Health Application (CIMHA) Mental Health Establishments Collection (MHEC), and Queensland Hospital Admitted Patient Data Collection (QHAPDC). Additionally, a new data collection platform (RedCap) is utilised to collectconsumer, carer, and clinician data that is specific to the anticipated outcomes of the AET MOS.

The goals of the Evaluation Framework are three-fold, reflecting the short, medium and long-term objectives, to;

  • understand the cohort of young people that enter Jacaranda Place
  • identify consumer outcomes achieved by Jacaranda Place
  • better understand consumer journeys across the health sector (both pre, during, and post-Jacaranda Place).

Jacaranda Place in-patient beds commenced operations on 18 May 2020 with data collection as identified in the Evaluation Framework commencing at this time. Governance mechanisms have been put in place to provide collaborative stewardship to support the effective and efficient delivery of the AET MOS, including supporting ongoing service development and clinical improvement including evaluation and research activities.
