Topics Modules Overview Learning Objectives
1. Patient Safety Introduction

Topic 1 introduces patient safety, defines clinical incidents and reinforces the need for all health care workers to identify and report incidents in a timely manner.

Topic 2 introduces continuous quality improvement and outlines and identifies the steps involved in a continuous quality improvement cycle. It reviews and discusses the application of continuous quality improvement and provides examples of CQI in action.

Topic 3 introduces the NSQHS standards and defines each of the 10
standards. It also discusses the roles and responsibilities, at various levels, in regards to the application of the standards within the health care setting.

Topic 4 discusses patient assessment, identifying and responding to the
deteriorating patient, preparing a patient for transport and providing
accurate and timely information for clinical handover.

 

On completion of this topic learners will be able to

  • Identify the major contributors of harm to patients
  • Define adverse events and clinical incidents
  • Describe the reporting process for a clinical incident
  • Define CQI in PHC
  • Identify the steps of a quality process
  • Discuss the application of CQI in the primary health care setting
  • Define and discuss the utilisation and application of the 10 NSQHS standards
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of patients, families and health care staff in regards to the NSQHS standards.
  • Identify and respond to the deteriorating patient
  • Assess and prepare a patient for transport
  • Provide complete and accurate information for clinical handover.
