Recording vaccinations (AIR and SPA)

This information is for Queensland Health public health facilities.

Private providers may have their own systems for keeping track of staff vaccinations.

Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

It is recommended that a record of all vaccines administered be uploaded to the AIR.

Mandatory reporting of vaccinations to the AIR commenced 20 February 2021 for COVID-19 vaccines and for Influenza vaccinations given on or after 1 March 2021.

Mandatory reporting of the National Immunisation Program funded vaccines into AIR commenced 1 July 2021.

Staff Protect Application (SPA)

SPA is a Queensland Health enterprise based state-wide application for the recording of:

  • staff vaccinations
  • staff immunity to vaccine preventable diseases
  • allergies
  • vaccination refusals
  • surface antibody levels for hepatitis B and rubella
  • fit testing results.

It continues to be best practice to enter healthcare worker vaccination and screening details into SPA in addition to entering a record of vaccination to AIR. Refer to the SPA user manual for guidance on use of the application. The SPA user manual can be accessed from within the application in the "Help" menu.

Log-in to the Staff Protect Application.

Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) are required to record employees, contractors, and volunteers:

  • vaccination history, OR
  • evidence of non-susceptibility to the specified vaccine preventable diseases.

HHSs are not responsible for recording students’ vaccination history as this is the responsibility of the education provider.

Privacy

Information must be recorded in a secure database that is only accessible to authorised personnel, and is maintained in accordance with:

  • Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld)
  • Public Records Act 2002 (Qld).

The AIR and SPA system meets these requirements.
