Expanded prescribing rights
From 1 December 2025, all specialist GPs will be able to initiate, modify, and continue psychostimulants for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), within existing maximum dose limits.
Paediatricians will also have their authorisations extended to enable them to prescribe psychostimulants to young adults with ADHD (aged 18 to 24 years), within existing maximum dose limits, to further ease the burden during the transition to adulthood.
These changes reflect a national shift towards community-based ADHD management and will:
- reduce referral bottlenecks and waitlists, enabling more integrated and accessible ADHD care through general practice
- strengthen continuity of care for Queenslanders with ADHD, particularly during the transition from adolescence to adulthood
- benefit people in regional and remote areas where access to specialist services can be limited
- reduce wait times and financial barriers, helping more Queenslanders access the care they need, when they need it.
